LAHC Innovation Lab
The Latin American Heads Conference, more commonly known as LAHC, involves a series of schools from nine different countries in Latin America. These schools meet each year at the annual conference, involving teachers as well as students. This year, the conference was held in April, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, centering on the topic of Creativity and Innovation. I travelled to Sao Paulo with three other girls, Micaela de las Casas, Valentina Pellaquim and María Lucía Pérez, and six teachers in order to attend this conference.
Throughout the week, we received what the organizers called 'innovation training', which prepared us towards creating a final product at the end of the conference. These talks and trainings were lead by Camila Ghattas, a futurologist that personally created a great impact on me, and helped me see that, even though I see myself as someone that is not creative, there really is creativity in everyone. Aside from that, we had what was called 'interest clusters' which were small workshops that we got to chose regarding different areas in which innovation and creativity is important. We also had talks from Carl Honoré, a Canadian journalist; Ben Walden, an English actor; and Ollie Tumner, a body percussionist.
The innovation training and talks we received were used, as mentioned before, to create a final product. I teamed up with two other Peruvians, two Brazilians and a Venezuelan. (RA 5) We created a solution to companies' problems regarding how eco friendly they are, and how we could find a solution to the reduced ecological footprint companies produce providing economic incentives. (RA 6) The project was called ECOnomy, and consisted of a platform which has all the information on the different companies and how eco friendly each of them is. This could be done so by scanning a QR code on products and accessing the app instantly. Also, the app would include information from the consumers, as they could rate each company based on their opinion, contributing to the feedback on the platform. As our Venezuelan friend know how to code, he created a prototype for the ECOnomy website, which can be accessed here: http://www.sunnysidecode.com/lahc/
The LAHC conference was a really great experience for me, as I got to meet 72 people from all over Latin America and learn about how creativity can be found everywhere. Before leaving I thought that I was not creative at all, and never thought that I would create a project like we did. (RA2) I learned a lot from the conference and from the people I met, and had an amazing and unforgettable time.

  3. The LAHC turned out to be one of the most rewarding experience I have had with students. The intellectual curiosity shown by the group, their passion to make a positive change and the richness of their multicultural background allied to the power of a differentiated teaching and learning methodology made of this conference a fertile field for inspiration, creativity and ultimately innovation.
I was particularly impressed by the synergy amongst the San Silvestre School girls. Their alignment shown during every group exercise is remarkable. Beyond that, their collective energy and flexibility to co-create within any other group and the ability to express their ideas with conviction and reasoning was very unique.
The passion to make a positive change I refer to is made very clear once you meet ECOnomy. Mica’s group did not only prototype the idea, but as well the application with real purpose, technological feasibility, capturing value to the market and relevance to the population, a very powerful idea to impact the society.
It was a pleasure to meet you, Mica. Remember that the best way to predict the future is by creating it. I believe you are have been truly empowered to be a pioneer of transformation. And for all these reasons, my gratitude!
